Earmark is a browser extension that saves your browser windows so you can pick up where you left off. It is made by Nikhil Thakur ("we") and built to work entirely on your computer.

The short version

What Earmark stores, and where

All of the following is stored only in your browser profile, on your computer.

Data When Why
Address and title of each tab in a window you pause When you pause To reopen the tabs
Tab order, the active tab, pinned tabs, and tab group names and colours When you pause To rebuild the window as it was
Scroll position, page height, and up to 120 characters of visible text near the top of your screen When you pause To bring you back to the same spot
Session names, categories, notes (with their dates and links to other sessions) and notes on single tabs When you edit them To remind you what you were doing
Settings and simple counters, such as how many sessions you've saved When they change To remember your choices

In memory only, cleared when the browser closes: if you allow site access, Earmark keeps the last scroll position of open tabs, so it can keep your place in tabs Chrome has put to sleep. It also keeps a small record of each open window's tab addresses, titles, pinning and groups (never page content), so that a window you close without pausing can still be kept. Private windows are never recorded.

Windows closed without pausing: when you close a window holding three or more pages without pausing it, Earmark saves it on your computer like a paused session. It is deleted after 24 hours (30 days with Earmark Pro) unless you choose to keep it. You can turn this off in Settings.

Earmark does not read or store form fields, passwords, anything you type into web pages, cookies, page contents beyond the short snippet above, or your browsing history outside the windows you pause.

Voice notes

Voice notes are optional, and the microphone is used only while you're dictating. Earmark never records, stores or sends audio itself; it uses your browser's built-in speech recognition.

The resulting text becomes part of your note and is stored on your computer like any other note.

Earmark Pro and payments

Earmark Pro is sold through Dodo Payments, our merchant of record, which processes your payment, handles sales tax and sends your receipt and license key. Dodo Payments receives the details you enter at checkout, such as your name, email address, billing country and payment details, and handles them under its own privacy policy. We never see your card or payment details. We can see your name, email address and order details in Dodo Payments, and use them only to support your purchase, for example to resend a lost license key or process a refund.

When you activate Pro, Earmark sends Dodo Payments your license key and a device label (such as "Earmark on macOS") so Dodo can confirm the key is valid. Earmark checks again about once a week, and tells Dodo when you remove Pro from a browser. That's all it sends: nothing about the pages you visit or the sessions you save.
